Today in the western reaches of the pine ridge mountain range, BEL and BECOL held a concrete placement ceremony for the construction of the Chalillo dam.

Work has been underway for month, but with all the legal hurdles now out of the way - the ceremony was held to make it known that full steam ahead. And the man who endorsed Chalillo before any court Prime Minister Said Musa, said he is heartened to reach the point from which there can be "no turning back."

Hon. Said Musa,
"The Chalillo will be good for Belize. On completion it will assure more reliable electricity supply for the country. Hydroelectricity is the cheapest and economical source of local energy."

"The pouring of concrete today at the project site marks an important point of no turning back in the collective efforts of our investors, our government, and our people to ensure the construction of the dam will become a reality in the not too distant future."

The Chalillo dam should be completed in 2005.
