Besides tourism, agriculture and fisheries there are not many industries that enjoy much prominence in the Belizean economy. But someday Belize's untapped mineral resources could attract major earnings.
Today the Geology and Petroleum Department held a seminar to highlight the new emerging industries that are springing out of the Belize's little known mineral reserves.
"We are reviewing the legal operations related to mining in Belize after about 10 years of the existing mines and mineral act. We are looking at the status of minerals in general, the potential for minerals in general we see it adds to the construction and industrial sector because houses cannot be built unless you are thinking of wooden houses with thatch roof but once it's concrete/cement this is where the mineral sector comes in. So we are looking at the industrial/construction minerals and you will see our display has a combination where we are using Belizean wood with local marble from Georgeville to create some wonderful side table, and center table. Not only are we looking at the industrial/construction sector but we are looking at gold; we are introducing a special project called Eco-gold Belize which focuses around a small alluvre gold deposit in the Chiquibuil forest. The idea is that we are murrowing nature, the aesthetics of the area, the various scenes that are found in the area with actually panning for gold at the alluvre fan where the gold is deposited."
