There's been a sharp cut in capital spending, but 'almost-zero' does not mean absolute-zero and government is finding ways to carry on with infrastructure projects. This morning Prime Minister Said Musa signed a $2.8 million grant agreement for the construction of the Silver Creek Bridge on the Hummingbird highway. $2.4 million of the cost will come from the European Union and the remaining $480,000 will come from the Government of Belize.

Speaking at the signing, Prime Minister Said Musa said in the case of a hurricane the bridge will ensure that the south remains linked to the rest of the country.

The new two-lane 100 feet long bridge will also facilitate easier transportation of goods from the south to the rest of the country. The project qualified for the grant under the EU's disaster prevention and preparedness program. Construction will begin in November and should be completed by August of 2006.
