The City Council is scrambling to find the funds to pay its sanitation debt. That is according to Councillor Roger Espejo. He told us that what Councillor Phillip Willoughby told us last night is the truth: the City Council is broke and it simply does not have the funds to pay BML. But Councillor Espejo says they are trying.

“Well basically we have to find the money. I spoke to the Valuation Manager this morning and he is working very hard to bring in taxes that are in arrears. I understood that he alone yesterday single-handedly brought in $30,000 which is very admirable and we want to see what we can collect between today and tomorrow and Friday to see if we can meet some of these bills. It is as Councillor Willoughby explained a cash flow problem and we have to find the money to pay its expenses.”
BML laid off 100 of its 150 workers on Monday and owner Lawrence Ellis says he can only continue paying the remaining 50 for another week.
