Turning now to the Consumer Price Index, prices in July of 2017, were only slightly higher than one year ago - including the sky-high price of gasoline and diesel. Here’s how the numbers people put it:
Jacqueline Sabal - Economic Statistics Department
"The inflation rate for the month July 2017 stood at 0.6 percent. This means that on average prices were higher than they were in July of 2016. The inflation for the first seven months of the year 2017 1.4 percent in comparison to the same period of last year the 0.7 percent decrease in the food and non-alcoholic beverages category was solely due to a decline in food prices. Now the increase in fuel and lubricant category is getting notably smaller when comparing the index of 2017 with this of 2016. The cost of fuel is indeed still higher than in 2016, however, fuel prices had already begun to increase around this time last year so the rate of the increase is now smaller. Across all municipalities, Orange Walk recorded the most significant decrease in home rental prices so they saw the lowest rate of inflation at 1.2 percent while Dangriga had the highest increase in home rental prices so this caused Dangriga to have the highest inflation rate at 2.7 percent.
