Belize Electricity Limited today announced that it has reconsidered its position on giving Belizeans a break on their light bills during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company will now be offering credit to over 7,000 of its most needy customers.

Those are the customers who were in the lowest consumption bracket, known as the social classification for their February and March electricity bills. They consumed an average of 60-kilowatt hours or less per month. A credit will now be applied to their accounts in the amount of their February and March electricity bills. This credit will apply even if the customer has already paid these bills.

Additionally, service disconnections will be suspended through April for all customers in the Social and Residential classifications countrywide, and for all hotel, restaurant and tour operator accounts.Â

Now, we will note that it’s still not what we’ve heard most consumers asking for, which is a suspension of bill payments until they get back on their feet, but it’s better than the little the company was offering before.
