And while those tyres burned in Camalote, the stevedores today were burnt after a sugar ship bypassed the Port of Belize and headed straight to Big Creek Port in Stann Creek. This came as a shock to the Christian Workers Union since today was the first day of negotiations to be held with PBL and the labor commissioner.
Today, the president, Evan Mose Hyde confirmed that it was during this meeting that they learnt that sugar will start going to the Big Creek Port. This is despite an MOU that CWU sent to the PM that was signed in 2006 by the then government stating a clause which prevented Toledo Enterprises from handling dry cargo.
Hyde told the media that they feel deeply hurt by this move and they will not give up just yet.
The negotiations for the CBA and the redundancy package have a timeline between now and August 9 to finish both.
