In early January, there was a public war of words between the Public Utilities Commission and Belize Electricity Limited - with bitter recriminations coming from both sides. Their dispute was over the Annual Review Decision - where the PUC got a little excited over some multi million dollar Cost of Power disparities and recommended a two cent increase in rates. For its part BEL asked for no increase.

Well, in the end, it seems the PUC agrees. A release says, quote, "The Commission received comments from stakeholders and determined that any rate increase may negatively affect the economic recovery of the country...the PUC issued a Final Decision...to reflect no change in the Tariffs for the period January 1, 2022 to June 30, 2022. The Mean Electricity Rate will remain at 39.9 cents per kilowatt hour." End quote.
