Tonight, no agreement has been signed between the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association and ASR BSI. This is after the cane farmers declared victory last night after 6 days of arduous negotiations - and members accepted the proposal from the PM.
And while there was joy in Sugarland - the devil is in the details - and three hours ago, the BSCFA made this post:
"We are currently still awaiting the receipt of the draft from the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture for review by our Attorney for accuracy of terms agreed, thereafter the final signature."
That draft was reportedly finished at 3:30 pm and sent to the BSCFA so that their lawyer could review it for approval. Up to news time that hadn't happened yet. And even when it does, ASR/BSI still has to sign - and though it's hardly mentioned - they also want their own commitments from the Prime Minister.
We don't know yet what these include, but up to last week - they had been asking for the reinstatement of development concessions. The terms of reference for the commission of inquiry could also be a sticking point.
