Man Killed on Southern Highway

A pedestrian was knocked down and killed yesterday evening on the Southern Highway. The victim is 26-year-old Armando Gomez who police say was walking near his home when he was hit by Toyota van driven by Clifford Calam. calam's story to police is that around 7:00 pm he was heading home to Placencia when he was blinded by the lights from an oncoming vehicle. Calam claims that to avoid a collision he swerved off the road and that's when he hit Gomez. Gomez was pronounced dead at the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga and his body awaits a post mortem. Calam meanwhile has been detained by police.
