Two men are dead and a third is still in the hospital recovering after road traffic accidents on the Northern Highway over the holiday weekend.

The first fatality was around 8:15 on Saturday night when 34 year old Daniel Acosta's Ford Bronco collided into a mini-bus being driven by 57 year old Teoficio Gilharry. The collision occurred near the Northern border and police say Acosta, who was traveling toward Corozal town, lost control of his vehicle causing the collision. Acosta was dead on arrival at the Corozal Town Hospital and Gilharry is in the KHMH tonight recovering.

The second fatality was from a hit and run on what police suspect were two sleeping men. Around 1 am on Saturday morning police found the body of 28-year-old Alfredo Gutierrez between miles 57 and 58 on the northern Highway. Police have determined that Guiterrez was drinking with friends at a bar in Trial Farm Village when he along with 21-year-old Elicio Novelo left to walk home. He never made it and police now suspect both men might have fallen asleep on the road since injuries consistent with that of a road traffic accident were also visible on Novelo.
