The Fire Department had to bring out the Jaws of Life when a man was trapped in his wrecked minivan this afternoon. It occurred when a gas tanker and a taxi van collided on the Northern Highway. At around 1, the northbound taxi, driven by Jorge Caseres collided with a gas tanker heading in the opposite direction. We arrived on the scene at mile 18 where we spoke to the tanker's driver Glenn Godoy who explained that this is the first time he's been involved in an accident.
Glenn Godoy, Truck Driver
"Basically I was heading from north to Belize City. Upon approaching the minivan, as we approached each other, very suddenly he drifted into my lane slightly. It was so sudden that I couldn't brakes. I tried to turn but upon turning he hit the rear wheel of my truck."
Alfonso Noble,
Now his vehicle was loaded with passengers, are you glad that nobody got seriously injured?
Glenn Godoy,
"Well I was very concerned about that because after the impact I ran back to the van with my extinguisher because I saw smoke was coming from it. So I know that my truck didn't get any damage so I came to see what had happened to them and that's when we observed that he was pinned inside the van and I went back to secure and stay with my truck for other incoming truck."
Alfonso Noble,
You still seem shaken, is this the first time this happened to you?
Glenn Godoy,
"Yes this is the first time I ever caught in a traffic accident."
Caseres was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment. He received injuries to one of his legs. His 7 passengers, comprising his wife and 6 children ranging in ages from 3 to 22 sustained only minor injuries.
