He faced 20 years in jail but this evening the son of Deputy Commissioner of Police Maureen Leslie was sentenced to 4 years in jail for maim. He was originally charged for attempted murder but the now 22 year old Derrick Leslie pleaded down to the lesser charge of maim a week ago. His victim is Gerald Hewlett who says that during a basketball game in April of 2006 - the two sparred over a travelling violation. Leslie left and returned with a weapon and attacked Hewlett – injuring him to the left hand and neck.

Hewlett who is a BDF volunteer says he has limited use of his left hand and his voice has been affected. Hewlett says he is satisfied with the jail time Leslie got but he told us a short while ago that Derrick’s sister threatened him. He says he will file a restraining order against her.

Deputy Commissioner Maureen Leslie was at court for her son’s sendoff to the Hattieville Prison.
