7NEWS has confirmed that the Police and Human Services Department are investigation a possible case of human trafficking. It involves an Indian national who was about to be hustled out of the country yesterday, allegedly by his boss at a major discount supermarket. But it didn’t happen because his pregnant Belizean girlfriend alerted police and human services officials.
The man, whose name we are not releasing, was already at the airport but he didn’t hop on the 4 o’clock flight. He is considered a possible human trafficking victim and is in a “safe house” tonight in Belmopan.
He has been interviewed as has his employer. He will remain in protective custody until the DPP decides if anyone will be charged and for what. Our information is that an immigration officer was involved, but that is unconfirmed.
