A robber got a sharp and painful come-uppance this morning when he was shot by a man he had just jacked. It occurred just before noon on Malcolm Street in the Port Loyola area when three men robbed an elderly man of his cell phone and other valuables at gunpoint. The robbers fled and probably thought they had gotten away until the victim pulled out a gun and turned it on them. They ran but two of the shots hit one of the robbers in his buttocks and back. We spoke to a resident on Malcolm Street who saw it transpire. Se asked to appear off camera.
Witness,
“I just heard gunshots and as anybody would I looked through the door and I just saw a bicycle lying on the street, middle of the street. That is what I saw and heard.”
Keith Swift,
You didn’t see anyone by the bike?
Witness,
“There was no one. By the time I reached out there was no one. What I heard is that it was a robbery taking place. Two guys came up to an elderly man and tried to take away his chain and his phone but they got away with it, that is what I heard people saying. When the guys took the chain from the elderly person, this is what I heard, and his cell phone they left and the person who they robbed aimed after them and the gunshot was fired to the person taking off, to me facing backwards. The robber got shot.”
The robber is reported to be named David Sutherland. Because of the shot to his back which we are told affected his lung, he is hospitalized on a respirator and under police guard. Police confirm that a stolen cell phone was found on the hospital bed beside him. The robbery victim was on Malcolm Street getting his car fixed.
