Two years and three months is the jail sentence a pair of career shoplifters face for stealing a tin of Klim and a pack of batteries. The women are 22 year old Nokia Smith and 20 year old Sasha Bowen. They were arraigned in court on Friday on a count each of handing stolen goods and a count each of using indecent words upon a police officer.
The allegation is that last Wednesday they entered Julio Delcid’s Store on the Northern Highway and stole a pan of Nestle brand Klim for baby priced at $21.95 and a box of heavy duty batteries priced at $15. The women put the items between their legs and walked out the store. Dulcid saw it unfold on his surveillance camera and called police. They caught up with Smith and Bowen on the road side and arrested them. They led police to the stolen items stashed in an open lot near mile 8.
In court on Friday the women denied stealing the items and pled down to handling stolen goods since they claim to have been selling the items for the real thief. They begged for mercy and after thinking it over, this morning Magistrate Sharon Frazer convicted each of them to 2 years for the handling stolen goods and 3 months for the indecent words upon a police officer. The incident words charge is for allegedly cursing in front of a police officer.
As we mentioned, the women are no strangers to the law since in 2008 – they were busted stealing Ovaltine and Dutch cheese from Sav-U Supermarket. In October of last year they were also busted trying to shoplift from a store in King’s Park.
Again for last Wednesday’s incident, they were sentenced to 2 years and 3 months. Sasha Bowen has two young children – one is three months and the other a year old.
