Yesterday two primary school students were shot while on their way home from school. It was an outrageous broad daylight attack and as we as we reported last night – the students were nothing more collateral damage in a street war. The gunshots rang out at 3:45 pm on Mahogany Street when dozens of students from Saint Martin’s Deporres and Saint Luke’s Methodist Schools were walking home from school. But that apparently didn’t matter to the shooters who opened fire on Brandon Smith but ended up injuring 9 year old Alex Estelle and 12 year old Rosalyn Ranguy.
Both are students at St. Deporres Primary School. 9 year old Alex Estell was shot on his right leg and is tonight still hospitalized at the KHMH. His family says the 9 milimeter penetrated Alex’s foot. 12 year old Rosalyn Ranguy was luckier but only by an inch. The bullet grazed her right foot and she was treated and released from the KHMH. But the shooting traumatized the standard five student. She spoke to us today with the consent and in the presence of her mother Andrea Saragoza. She told us about yesterday’s traumatic attack.
Rosalyn Ranguy, Shooting Victim
“Me and my friend were walking yesterday evening. A boy just fly past me and after a little while I saw a next one behind him and I saw he hauled out a gun and he just started to shoot it at the next one and my leg started to burn me and when I looked at it, it was bleeding.”
Andrea Saragoza, Mother
“Thank God the bullet neva gone into her foot, she just got grazed. But she had to get stitch, she got about 8 stitch on her feet and everyday I have to take her to get dressing and thing.”
Keith Swift,
“Are you feeling better today?”
Rosalyn Ranguy,
“Yes sir I am feeling a little bit better.”
Keith Swift,
“You ever thought something like this would happen to you?”
Rosalyn Ranguy,
“No.”
Andrea Saragoza,
“I was coming home from school with my little boy but I was talking to one of my friends coming home and one of her friends came and told me that Rosalyn got shot. I never believed and I took my time and went to my dad and when I reached there he had already gotten the phone call from hospital and then we went to the hospital.
My reaction was I got so frightened and thing because we didn’t expect that to happen big day and thing like that. How could those boys be so…because that is stupidness. Children are walking on the street and that is lone nonsense and it could have been worse. One of them could have died or so.
I just wah the youths behave themselves because so much things are happening and I done lose two brothers by gunshot already and it is hard.”
Rosalyn Ranguy will be out of school until Monday. One of bullets did hit Brandon Smith in his shoulder. Police have made no arrests.
