Twenty seven year old Andrea Jenkins, a mother of four who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking last Friday, was spared a jail time today by Magistrate Sharon Fraser. After she heard a plea for mitigation from Jenkins’ attorney, Arthur Saldivar and Jenkins herself, Magistrate Fraser fined Jenkins $10,000 and gave her until June 30th to pay. If she defaults on payment she will serve three years.
The Magistrate told Jenkins that taking drugs to prison is a serious offence and she could have been sentenced to prison and fined. She said she decided not to impose a prison sentence because she took into consideration the fact that Jenkins has no previous conviction, and she has four children. Jenkins was busted last Thursday at Kolbe Foundation prison in Hattieville with Ninety Four grams of cannabis hidden in her underwear. She said she was trying to smuggle the cannabis into prison to give to her baby’s father who is an inmate.
