Thirty seven year old Lester Smith, serving 5 years for burglary, was sentenced to 2 years for the theft of towels and 1 year for escape today.

In March of last year, Smith was seen coming out of Stephanie Beaton's yard in Bootsville - which is off Faber's road in Belize City.

He was carrying 8 towels which he had taken off Beaton's clothes line. Police caught Smith with the towels slung across his shoulder, riding a bicycle at the corner of Faber's Road and Neal Pen Road.

While the police were transporting Smith to Queen Street Police station, he jumped out of the back of the pickup truck when it reached the foot of the Swing Bridge. He was captured by police shortly afterwards at the corner of Church and George streets.

In court, Smith denied committing the offences, and testified in court that he bought the towels from a man who was in the area. Smith has 3 convictions for burglary, 2 for theft, and 1 for handling stolen goods.
