Belmopan police and the family of a 20 year old student from St. Matthews Village are trying to figure out why someone would kill a 20 year old student.

The young man had been living in a shack in a remote area of the village where there's hardly a road and there are no streetlights.

And on Sunday at around midnight someone capitalized on the expanse of darkness to prey upon the young man.

His mother told us they took away her baby:

Jules Vasquez Reporting:

Adela Mejia is crying for her 20 year old son, Jorge Mario Augustin a student at ITVET who was found here - 75 feet from his makeshift home - on Monday morning. He had been shot four times, twice to the head. Police at the scene this morning found one more expended casing from the 38 pistol that killed him.

He was killed 10 feet from a neighbor's home in the pitch dark of this remote area on Sunday night at around midnight - but the neighbor claims he thought it was the sound of hunters who frequent the area.

His father recalls they last time they met:

Mario Orlando Augustin - Father of Deceased

"That same day he passed here and told me dad I'm going to sleep. That was at 8:30. I said, 'Good son, that's fine...'Then we heard the shots around twelve in the night but as how people come back here to hunt we thought somebody was hunting. We never thought it was the evil that happened."

for this family, an unexplainable act of evil:

Adela Mejia - Mother Of Deceased

"I don't know why anyone would have the intention to kill him - because he is a calm person. He goes from school to home and then to work."

Claudia Augustin - Aunt of Deceased

"I don't have an idea why. Because he didn't have money for example for his graduation to buy his clothes and he went to my house."

Mario Orlando Augustin
"I think that perhaps there was some equivocation, because he didn't have enemies. He didn't have money so we can't say they killed him for money. He didn't have friends. I think maybe it was an equivocation. Anyway, that's why the law is there to investigate."

Claudia Agustin
"He didn't do bad things and why does someone have to kill him so cruelly? It hurts, it is a very hard pain."

Mario Orlando Augustin
"Yes it's cruel but that's life and we have to accept it."

Belmopan Police have one person detained.

They were back in the area today canvassing residents for information.
