Those of us who drive on the highways have all seen it: a driver trying to overtake a long line of vehicles - unable to make it back into his or her lane, thus forcing oncoming traffic off the road - to avert a head on collision.
That's what happened this morning at mile 13 on the Western Highway - but the driver who had to take to the shoulder lost control, and here's what happened next:..
Jules Vasquez reporting
The three vehicle accident happened at mile 13 on the Western Highway. This D-Max lost control after it was forced onto the shoulder of the highway by an overtaking vehicle that came into its lane.
The driver lost control on the shoulder and lurched back onto the highway - hitting this Isuzu Trooper and Suzuki Vitara that were in two, tied together by a tow rope.
Floyd Lemus

"Four vehicles behind and when there were coming the vehicle that knocked into me was coming too fast, with that speed the driver drove off the road and he couldn't control the vehicle and he came right back on the road and hit my vehicle and his vehicle spin and I slide all the way to the bridge."
His vehicle was actually on its side and slid all the way to the railing of the bridge - almost toppling over into the Creek.
After that tipped over and slid, the D-Max also rammed into the Vitara:
Floyd Lemus
"The same vehicle hit the next one. I was going in the front, I got hit first but with the speed she was driving, she could not control the vehicle. She hit my vehicle I slide and then after it hit the other vehicle, or else she would have gone on the other side."
The impact left Lemus with a back injury and a teenager had to be hospitalized - his vehicle though is a write off:
Floyd Lemus
"Well I don't think that the vehicle is good because the bottom of the vehicle is gone, the chassis, everything is crushed into the bottom, because it went on one side, it flipped me over, so the two wheels are gone."
But, while his vehicle is a write off, it could have been worse:
Floyd Lemus
"Well I feel good that no one had died, at this accident, it was a good thing and thank God for that."
And all this wreckage is left in the wake, the overtaking vehicle that cause the accident fled the scene. No notice of intended prosecution has been served.
