And perhaps that continued cooperation can keep major crime numbers down. The Minister is hopeful that by the end of 2022, the murder count will be below 125 - which was the total number of murders for 2021. He claims that they've been doing things differently than the previous administration, and attributes that to the relatively lower murder counts over the past couple years. But he admitted that there's still a lot to go in relation to the other major crimes.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs
"I also had the opportunity to meet with the top brass with the police department from inspector and above, that was about 200 police officers in last week, and I had to commend them for the good work that they've been doing especially when it comes to the number of murders for 2022. It is hoped that if we continue along this trajectory that by the end of 2022, we would have gotten less murders than 2021 which I keep reminding are actually less than all of the UDP 13 years and oftentimes I get criticized in the house by the very same UDP but my mom always told me when you're in class don't copy from failures, not that I would ever copy, but if you're going to copy, don't copy from failures, so we haven't been doing anything that they have been doing, we've been taking a different approach at policing, we've been seeing very good results, there are certain areas that we have to focus on like burglaries and so we're starting out with a PR campaign when it comes to burglaries."
Up until the end of November 2022, there were 102 murders. A double murder this past weekend has increased that to 104, so far. At this time last year, 117 murders had been recorded.
