The compol says that he is of the view that if there were more stringent penalties for these offenses it would reduce a number of accidents from occurring, especially ones caused by drunk driving.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

"And when it comes to the issue of persons driving under the influence again we are looking at amending the law to make it a criminal offense and my suggestion is that if you are found driving under the influence you are not in no accident just found driving under the influence. One to two years imprisonment if you are in an accident and alcohol is involved people get injured, Three to five years. In situations where you cause a death of a person through drunken behavior in a vehicle look at 8 to 10 years, you have to have stringent laws that are going to serve as a deterrent because right now as is you get charged for driving under the influence they go to court you get charged $250 your license is suspended for one year but after six months you can apply for it so in six months time you can be back behind a wheel driving again we have to make the law more stricter so that people see it as a deterrent they are going to think twice to drink and drive so that is something we are working on."

There have been 215 arrests for drunk driving in 2024.
