In that story you saw Reverend David Goff, the only major denominational leader visible in the protest. The Methodist minister's presence was notable for many things but one of them that we couldn't quite fit into the story was his open challenge to the Council of Churches. Here that is now.
Rev. David Goff, Methodist Church
“Where is the voice of the church on this occasion and in the whole crisis which we find ourselves. The church has been deafening silent and I think we need to do something about that.”
Jules Vasquez,
The National Council of Churches has not joined with the unions in making an outcry about it.
Rev. David Goff,
“And therein lies my concern and disappointment.”
According to our records, the Council is led by Anglican Canon Leroy Flowers, the namesake of the Flowers Commission which government had appointed to review Social Security's working and propose reform. Many of those fundamental reforms such as changing the composition of the government controlled Social Security's Investment Committee have not been implemented.
