It's been a time of political unease and social agitation, not to mention the fact that the perpetual refrain of 'no money noh deh' has turned into a sort of national lament. But this September season, Belizeans will still find a way to celebrate and to do it with verve, and gusto, and meaning. What is meaning in the context of September? The Chair Of the Celebrations Committee is tenth traditionalist Sharon Pitts-Robateau and at last night's official opening ceremonies, she told why the tenth still matters.

Sharon Pitts-Robateau, Chair September Celebrations Committee
“Today, tonight it is still about the battle and the Belizean flag as it now is. As we commemorate our twin historic events, the 10th and the 23rd anniversary of Belize’s independence, we pay homage to our brave ancestors whose patriotic victory allowed us from 1798 to forge ahead to the political opportunity and victory of 1981. Indeed we are here because they were here.”

“This year our official September Celebrations theme is ‘Belize at 23: free engaging and embracing her peoples.’ Whether the saying is regarded as a milestone reached or to be reached, our common mandate must be that as her peoples, we must always free engage and embrace our Belize.”
