One of the country's largest, oldest and most venerable institutions, the Anglican church is in a time of upheaval. The bishop of the Anglican Church, Sylvestre Romero has announced that he is resigning effective November 30th. He will move unto a post in the state of California where he will serve as interim bishop. Romero has served as bishop since 1994 and was to serve 5 more years until his retirement at the age of 65.
Many of the Anglican faithful have intimated to us that they are shocked at his sudden departure. What's behind it? Well there are plenty of rumors about plots to remove him and the like, but for the time being that's just open speculation, as the bishop has made the decision to resign. The question of succession is another one that is very much up in the air and there are many popular, powerful Anglican clergymen primed for the post.
The rift, if there is one, will be on public display in November when the region's Anglican leaders gather in Belize for a synod. What did the bishop have to say... well today he told us that he will comment to the press only after he's gotten clearance form the archbishop in the Bahamas, Drexel Gomez.
