It is the oldest story in history, the story of nativity. And the legendary tale will play out on the stage of the Bliss tonight but with a twist. A cast of over 30 actors will star in Belizean nativity. The play was adapted for stage by Colville Young from his book Colville Young and it will be presented by the ST. Luke's Methodist Youth Group. Steve Duncan is one of the producers and also a star.
Steve Duncan,
"It is sort of an adaptation to the nativity, as we know it, and to try to get people in Belize to relate to it. So that's why he named it the Belizean nativity. He changed it up a bit to add in some local flavors, as it were."
Keith Swift,
Can people who go to the play expect to laugh or get a religious lesson?
Steve Duncan,
"It's a combination of the two. What Sir Colville has done is he used the creation back in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve, and he linked it to the reason for the coming of Jesus Christ. But in between he has tried to fill it with some laughter."
Keith Swift,
By the time most people see this newscast, the play would be starting shortly so why should they get off their couch and head to the Bliss?
Steve Duncan,
"Well I think it would be very easy to say that at this time, traditionally between Christmas and New Year's, things get very quiet. But most importantly it is something that is geared towards the family. During the Christmas and New Year's celebrations, invariably we tend to focus quite a lot on the adult entertainment and people stay out all night and bring in the New Year's and you bring in the Christmas and that type of activity. This is something where the adults are able to go and take their children and feel comfortable that children will enjoy themselves in the clean atmosphere and they themselves will enjoy it. I am sure they will."
The play starts at 7. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $15 for reserved. The funds will go to help the youth group and also the St. Luke's Parish which is this year celebrating its 40th anniversary.
