Under the theme "Improving Marketing and Sustaining Natural Resources Systems in Latin America and the Caribbean," agricultural bodies from both Latin America and the Caribbean gathered at the Princess Hotel and Casino for a 5 day conference. President of the Agro Economic Society Wendell Parham explains that the regions have a lot in common as it relates to agriculture and there is much to learn from one another.
Wendell Parham, President - Agro-Economic Society
"We have common problems and with common challenges. For example in agriculture, we are dealing with marketing concerns, we are dealing with the environment, we are dealing with how do you sustain natural resources. So this particular meeting is trying to merge the energies from the Caribbean Agro-Economic Society and the Latin American Society in an attempt to address common problems.
This type of forum is really to share information and experiences or research findings and to cross fertilize ideas and to develop linkages among not only Latin Americans and the Caribbean people but in particular for the people in Belize that will benefit from meeting these people who were here who will examine many of the scientific findings and research that has been done and development papers, particularly Belize papers, that are being represented by, we have about seven or eight Belizean presenters on various aspects of the regime here in terms of forestry, agriculture, tourism, climate change, and a whole series of papers.
We believe that by looking at these presentations and research work that we can discern certain pathways to sustain the environment while we still have agriculture and tourism. So we believe by putting all the information and synergies together, we can come out with workable solutions that can inform policies."
The conference ends on Friday.
