A really big Belizean flag was unfurled on the commercial center today. At 45 feet long by 30 feet high – and 90 yards of material it’s a monster and the man behind it city councillor Roger Espejo told us it’s all about nationalism.
Roger Espejo, City Councillor
“The monster flag is not much of a surprise, it was out last year as you recall and the idea behind it then was to evoke a grand sense of pride from our community and that was the only idea behind it really to evoke a special sense of pride, a new found sense of pride from within the community.”
Jules Vasquez,
“Is the scale of it intended to inspire awe?”
Roger Espejo,
“To some degree yes.”
Jules Vasquez,
“I know it is just an artist’s work and these things are difficult but it looks like a yellow man and a black man. I know it is difficult to get big scale of work precise but explain what you’re trying to do with the coat of arms.”
Roger Espejo,
“You’re right in saying in suggesting the work was amateurly done and that is true. I think the colour was mutated to some degree but it was meant to be just as it is in all other flags. There is no underlying intention there.”
