Students at Corozal Junior College can now earn a bachelor’s degree from Galen University without ever stepping foot into a Galen classroom. This morning the schools signed a memorandum of understanding under which CJC students will be able to take classes for their Bachelor of Education degree from Galen at CJC. If it sounds complicated, CJC’s Dean and the Director of the School of Education at Galen say its not. In fact they say the collaboration will make it easy for those in the north to earn a bachelor’s degree in education.

“We will offer that same program in Corozal but essentially the 300 and 400 level, the last two years of a Bachelor’s Education Degree because Corozal Junior College already offers the Associate’s Degree. So students can register at Galen for a Galen program and they will receive a Bachelor’s of Education Degree from Galen University.”

“It will greatly benefit particularly those teachers from the northern districts, Corozal and Orange Walk, because they would now have a training opportunity at their doorstep which would significantly reduce the costs of upgrading beyond the Associate’s degree level.”

So they won’t have to travel all the way to Cayo to attend classes?
Jose Mai,
“No because the program will be delivered at the Junior College campus but it will be done on a part time basis which means that we would invite prospective students who are presently working in the primary school system because the program would be done in the evenings, perhaps on Saturdays, and during the summer.”
Dr. Filberto Penados,
“So what we offer is what Corozal Junior College doesn’t provide. So it is a win win situation. They don’t use the facilities on Saturdays and summers and so it allows them also to make greater use of the facilities that they have for the students who don’t have to come to Belmopan or Cayo to do their program, they can continue to work and they can study.”
