We often air bad news about the misdeeds of high school aged kids - but today we saw some in the streets taking a stand for a good cause.

Today approximately 98 Excelsior High students took to the streets bearing posters and banners in an anti-drug march to kick off Drug Awareness Week under the theme "Above the influence, that's me, So let's all be drug free". Counselor Greta Jenkins told us why this is important to Excelsior High:

Greta Jenkins, Counselor - Excelsior High

"This is a yearly event at our school because the type of students we cater for we do have some students that smoke marijuana and so we decided not to turn a blind to it but to embrace it and try to educate them about the dangers of using drugs."

Sarita Crawford, Student - Excelsior High

"It is an ideal way for people and our community to help the community to know that drugs is wrong so basically this week is to educate and remind students that drugs is bad for your health and to ensure them that we have resources that can help them and to just basically let them know that don't do drugs, drugs is bad."

Greta Jenkins, Counselor - Excelsior High
"With the crime over shadowing our nation right now I think people are not focusing so much on drugs right now and so we are just doing this to like bring it back in the forefront because even though we have crime it's an issue that is still affecting young people a lot."

For the remainder of the week the school will continue its anti-drug awareness by hosting guest lectures, a talent competition and will end of with a big fair.
