It may sound like something from far out of left field, but anyone who was driving on the Western Highway near La Democracia this evening can confirm that a swarm of flying termites has descended on the area.

Residents of La Democracia Village confirm to 7NEWS that there is a massive and visible cloud of termites hovering over about a 3-mile radius on the Western Highway in and around La Democracia Village. The good news is that it's not one of Pharaoh's plagues; these are thousands of male winged termites caught up in a mating frenzy.

It is a phenomenon which normally happens at the beginning of the rainy season. Because of the long drought it appears today's rain was more than welcome and it seems the insects went on a hatching binge. The situation is compounded tonight by birds who are feeding on the termites. Those knowledgeable in the annual event say it should last another day before it returns to normal.
