But the sugar crops aren't the only thing being threatened by the weather. Mai says that the droughts and now heavy rains have also significantly impacted the country's livestock. He explained how:
Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture
"Then in the area of livestock too much dry affects the grass production which is the food for cows and too much water also affects because the grass is full of water and the animals digest quickly, they poop a lot and therefore weight gain is reduced so both extremes and we are right there. We have dry one day and now no grass and now we have an abundance of grass and so this is what farmers have to live with everyday it's always a challenge. You saw the carrots lately the last part of the crop the rains came in the crop was in the field. That carrot was of very bad quality and so these are the challenges that farmers face everyday whether the soil or insects or diseases and so it's always a challenge for farmers and that's why we must be grateful for having farmers in this country they have to be respected and honored for the hard work they do trying to put food on the table for the Belizean people."
