The village of Douglas is a ghost town tonight. As expected, yesterday government quarantined the village – meaning all Residents had to leave and no one can enter. As we’ve reported, the village is under an average of two feet of water and its pit latrines have overflowed.

A release from the National Emergency Management Organization says the situation poses a serious health risk.

All 180 families or 800 residents have left. The majority of them have taken up temporary residence with family and friends in neighbouring villages of San Pablo and Nuevo San Juan.

We note that when we visited on Friday, 110 families had already left. The District Emergency Committee in Orange Walk is enforcing the quarantine.
