And while the KHMH is finally getting up to speed with that late twentieth century technology - the public San Pedro General Hospital has just had 34 million Belize dollars in funding approved - but no completion date has been announced.
So, that's why the Hope hospital is welcome - but with this quickly executed 6 million dollar project - complete with CT scan are they making the lagging public health care sector look bad? That's what we asked the Minister. He said public healthcare sector has a lot of catching up to do - and you can always blame that old UDP bogeyman.
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism
"Well, like the KHMH like many of the other institutions that government has some connection to, it was neglected by the previous administration. And so there is a lot of catch up that we had to do and continue to do that is why the BTB and my ministry are investing in and renovating the entire emergency room and to upgrade those facilities there."
"The need for healthcare is important to the tourism industry, tourism is not just about hotels and restaurants and bars and gift shops it's about having the necessary infrastructure so you need roads to go to the archeological sites and all the wonders you need services like this you need other infrastructure and so most of the projects that we are working on are tourism related."
