Up to last week there were reservations that the Belize/Guatemala process would fall apart but it seems like the blustery Guatemalans have come around as latest news out of Washington is that the Guatemalans have agreed to negotiate a new set of confidence building measures.

The new agreement is being negotiated in meetings being held today and tomorrow at the OAS main building in Washington D.C. According to a release from the OAS, delegations led by Minister Hon. Godfrey Smith and his counterpart Jorge Bris will frame these new measures to look at a mutual legal assistance agreement, a free trade agreement, freer movement of people and goods between both countries, and the development of joint tourism initiatives.

The OAS release cites both ministers as describing this as a new era in the bi-lateral relationship in which, "the parties commit themselves to promote favorable conditions for reaching a definitive solution to the differendum."
