Belizean Diplomat Nestor Mendez has made us proud again. The former Ambassador of Belize to the United States, was today re-elected as the Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States for another five year term.

And, he was elected by acclamation, which means he was unopposed and enjoyed the support of all 33 Member States present.

It’s a very senior diplomatic post, holding the second highest office in the OAS, which, politically, is the most influential and important hemispheric organisation for the America’s.

We spoke to him via phone from Washington D right after the vote:

Mendez is originally from the village of San Antonio Rio Hondo in the Orange Walk District.

Mendez is the only Belizean to hold such a senior post in the OAS. Â

As you heard he was re-elected along with Luis Almagro, the returning Secretary General of the OAS.Â
