It's one of the city's busiest intersections and over the past two months the junction of Freetown Road and Douglas Jones Street has become one of the most dangerous. The problem is that the traffic lights which at the intersection have not been working. The city's traffic manager Michael Godoy today confirmed to 7NEWS that the lights have been out for about two months and the City Council has been scrambling to fix them. The problem is with the relays switches that make the lights change in sequence.
CITCO has tried to repair the problem but Godoy says the relays keep going out. He says technicians have been brought in to determine if the problem is more than just the relays. In the interim Godoy says that traffic wardens are placed at the intersection during rush hours. But for the rest of the day, it is a free for all. Godoy denied there is an increase in traffic incidents at the intersection since he believes drivers are aware the lights are not functioning. Godoy is optimistic that the lights could be back on by this weekend.
The other traffic lights in the city, and the only ones working, are the corner of Vernon Street and Central American Boulevard and that is managed by the Ministry of Works.
