On Friday we broke the story of a Maya Island Air flight that veered off the runway at the Municipal Airstrip into the nearby mangrove swamps. It occurred around 5:40 and as we reported, the Cessna Caravan was arriving from San Pedro when there was a mechanical failure of some sort.

The pilot and thirteen passengers on board received no injuries. The plane also received little damage, if any, and on Saturday the aircraft was flown to the Phillip Goldson International Airport for a detailed inspection. A Maya Island Air official told us the pilot has hundreds of flight hours and is well experienced.

The Civil Aviation Department is leading the investigation.
