They've met twice in the past two weeks and yesterday the trade unions and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry sent a letter to the Prime Minister inveighing against the IMF recommendations and the government from which those recommendations were adduced. The letter says that firstly, government has grossly mismanaged public funds, second that the mismanagement has contributed significantly to the present economic difficulties and third that an investigation must be conducted to see what, if any, wrongdoing begot the DFC fiasco. The letter also makes a list of recommendations for constitutional amendments. It is signed by NTUCB General Secretary George Frazer and Chamber President Arturo Vasquez.
Today Arturo's brother, Ernesto who is the Prime Minister's press secretary called to say that the Prime Minister has not received the letter and only heard of it in the press. Vasquez added that most of the recommendations in the letter are already under continued review by the Cabinet. They will all be discussed when the National Economic Council meets next Wednesday.
