And while the union cling to their membership, the Labour Commissioner applauds them for doing so, but is speaking out against them for the illegal blockade of the roads, and for congregating in gatherings of more than 10 people.
In a Labour Ministry press release sent this evening, the Commissioner opens by recognizing and respecting the fundamental rights of labourers to the freedoms of assembly and expression.
But, she adds, quote, "...The blocking of highways and bridges are unlawful actions that are not internationally recognized industrial actions, nor those permitted by our domestic laws, and we must condemn this kind of activity. The congregation of persons in numbers larger than 10 are in flagrant breach of the COVID-19 Public Health Regulations. We, therefore, urge the unions to abstain from criminal and reckless activities that are harmful and reckless to the wider public." End quote.
