You'll remember the massive protests and road blocks by the unions earlier this year to try and persuade the government not to cut their salaries by 10%. It was the government's position that everyone - including ministers and those in the private sector - had to take some sort of cut during the pandemic.
And, apparently, it's everyone except the CEO's of the various ministries, that is.
A letter coming out of the Ministry of Finance dated July 2nd and signed by the Cabinet Secretary, Stuart Leslie, informed the CEO's that their salaries and allowances will remain as recommended in May 2020. As you know, at that time, the PUP government hadn't taken office and as such hadn't yet committed to a 10% cut.
But the CEO's salaries were never touched and the Cabinet Secretary even tells them to liaise with their finance officers to ensure that the proper salaries and allowances are reflected in the payroll. We note that in its Plan Belize manifesto, the PUP had committed to eliminate CEO's and revert to the convention of permanent secretaries.
