And today when we asked PM Briceno to respond to that short but provocative opinion from the leader of the opposition, he told us that there were a lot of considerations to be made, but he didn't necessarily disagree.

John Briceño, Prime Minister
" That's something that we have to take a close look at. They are serious concerns at PBL. I know that the Waterloo Group have been saying that they want to make an investment. I think in the area between 250 and 300 million U.S. dollars to have the cruise port and also container port."

"They believe that both of them have to come together, but so far they have not been able to pass through the environmental stage. They're trying to get approval from the NIAC. But between now and then there are issues with the port that has to be addressed. And the most important thing is that the port continues to deteriorate, that there have to be some sizeable investments that have to be made."

"And so it is something that we have to take a look at. And it's not necessarily just nationalizing, but to sit down with the new owners of the port to get an understanding from them whether they are going to make the necessary investments in the port as it is. And if they're not, then as a government we have to make a decision about what is in the best interest of Belize."
