Untitled Document And that highway is an important part of the public transportation picture - but there are so many moving parts. And the Ministry of Transport is in charge of regulating all of it.
Though it's been less than a month since Dr Louis Zabaneh took over the Ministry, he says that there are a number of issues that urgently need to be addressed urgently. He spoke more about it in a zoom today..
Dr Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Indigenous Constitutional and Religious Affairs And Transport
"Transport is a very large portion of the ministry in terms of resources, financial and humanities. The larger part of the portfolio, of course indigenous affairs are important and so is religious affairs and the constitution and that would take up a lot of focus and energy going forward. But with respect to transportation you can probably look at it as two main areas, one having to do with what we have in the laws for regulating traffic regulating the highways and the highways of the country, traffic laws across the country. We know that it needs a lot of attention. I'm sure that our new CEO will be able to help significantly in that area in the areas of enforcement but not just enforcement and even so revision of what we have, bringing it into the 21st century if you will. We are in 2025 so a lot of those laws have to be examined and reviewed to the reality of today. Then the other side has to do with national transportation, in particular bus transportation. We know that has been something that has affected us for decades where we have had poor quality service across the country, a number of issues especially that related to the safety of commuters on buses because of things like racing or poor quality equipment. Then the service that you get at the terminals you know the whole experience is wanting of significant attention for the quality to be improved. So that is another area we will be working on and we are in conversation on ways we can improve the system and hope that within the next month or so we would come to an understanding at cabinet about how we will address this problem that has been going on."
