The budget will be debated next week, and one of the line items which may come up for debate are the cuts to the Department of the Environment.
In an interview with the Minister Of Sustainable Development, we asked him whether he is satisfied with GOB's budget cuts in his ministry. And will they have enough to manage operations? And will it cover any upcoming or pending projects? The minister told us that whatever the budget cannot cover they will be sure to source the funds from elsewhere.
Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development
"I think that the monies we budgeted for what we are practically getting is not their fault we did not ask for more but I think in all government ministries most of the monies we get, a large portion goes to pay salaries and very little money goes towards operations. Luckily for our ministry, though, most of our departments and units get additional funding from other external sources for projects in biodiversity in climate change, the Forest Department gets projects in IUCN, the Selva Maya project, so we get other funding to be able to do our operations."
