Government's Car Czar Ashton Longsworth continues his crackdown on the abuse of government vehicles. Yesterday his office of Assets and Utilities Management outlined a nationwide "Stop and Check" operation targeting all government-owned vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment to ensure they are being used strictly for official duties.
In an internal memo signed by Longsworth, it says that officers will be inspecting key documentation, including:
- Valid driver's licenses, vehicle licenses, insurance, and operator's permits;
- Visibility of license plates;
- Department or ministry decals;
- Proper use of logbooks; and
- Authorization for operating vehicles outside regular working hours.
The memo also clearly outlines prohibitions, warning that unauthorized passengers, such as family members or friends, are not allowed in government vehicles. It also reiterates that tinted windows are banned, except for limited rear window and top windshield tinting under strict conditions. The Ministry emphasized that all government vehicles are to be used only for official government business and not for personal errands or transport.
