Tonight, the 7-time UDP San Ignacio Santa Elena Town Councillor Bernadette Fernandez has been notified by the UDP Central Executive that she must participate in a convention if she wants to run for an eighth term.

We spoke with Councillor Fernandez who explained that she will not participate in any convention. She views it as disrespect after being elected for seven successive terms, topping the polls a number of times, including as recently as 2024. Reports to 7 News also indicate that Mayor Earl Trapp has indicated that he is prepared to stand in solidarity with Fernandez and will speak with the party leader urgently to reverse course on this decision:

We have been informed that there is currently an emergency town council meeting scheduled for 6:30. Party Leader Tracy Panton issued a press release stating that the matter is being dealt with.
