And as hurricane season temperatures rise BEL is asking its customers to assist in lowering the demand for electricity by conserving energy where possible.

According to the company, unusually hot and humid weather has driven up demand to 3.5% higher than the peak demand that was projected for this year.

It could mean possible disruptions in the supply of electricity as Belizeans rely on more and more fans and air conditioners to beat the heat.

A release tonight says that this problem is only compounded by quote: " the sudden unavailability for maintenance servicing of the power plant owned and operated by the Blair Athol Power Company Limited (Bapcol). " That power plant along with BEL's Gas Turbine (GT) plant, serves as the main backup if supply is lost from CFE, Mexico, and also provides voltage support (to maintain normal voltage levels) in the southern region of the country.

Additionally, repairs on part of the transmission line that connects Mexico's CFE to BEL's central substation at Mile 8 on the George Price Highway have had to be postponed until Bapcol is brought back online.

And, while the company expects its various challenges to be resolved within the next 12 days they warn that customers should brace themselves for some unexpected power outages even in the sweltering heat.
