BTIA Slams Cruise Tourism

Belize is marketed internationally as "nature's best kept secret" but according to the Belize Tourism Industry Association cruise tourism will soon make that the "K Mart of the Caribbean."

True, cruise tourism is the golden calf that mere mortals dare not defy but BIT came out swinging against the industry today. A stinging statement criticizes government’s volume driven cruise policy. The statement points to damage to archaeological sites, reef degradation, and road deterioration.

The BIT which is controlled by hotel owners who do not benefit from cruise tourism is determined to keep pressure up on this issue and says it will submit a position paper to government.
