It's not just a lending institution, it's a movement and a community, and today, the Saint John's Credit Union reached out to recruit new young members. This morning at their Basra street headquarters, 3 of the credit union's toucan junior members received prizes as part of a new promotion. The junior members range in age from 1 to 12 and the Credit Union's general manager Daisy Dawson says the draw is one way of encouraging parents to save for their kids.
Daisy Dawson,
"This is venture that started out in July of this year. It is something new and what we want to do is teach children to start saving from an early age so you can start from age 1 to 12 year so that you prepare them so that when high school time comes around you have funds to start their college education. It is a new venture and every quarter we will be having a raffle so that they can win prizes."
"You will give that child that sense of responsibility that they start from early to prepare themselves for the workforce and to be prepared to achieve what they want in life."
"For today what we will be doing is giving gift certificates. One will be for courts where they can purchase a bicycle in this first one and then the other two will be gift certificates for the angelus press and stationary house where they can get their school supplies."
The names chosen this morning are Danielle Granados and Audra Gentle from Belize City, and Jeron Hernandez from Belmopan. The next draw takes place in March. The only requirement for opening a toucan junior savers' account is $10.
